MEGH DOOT A CRITIQUE

by Carmen Theis

"Megh Doot - The Cloud Messenger", produced by Asha Vattikuti, is based on a timeless tale of love lost and love found. In this story, young Yaksha becomes so engaged in his love for his wife that he neglects his duties towards his king Kubera and is banished for a year. Yaksha grieves in exile for his wife, and implores the clouds to deliver a message of his love to her. The king, overhearing the message, is so moved by Yaksha's love for his wife that he forgives Yaksha, and the lovers are reunited. Anup Das as Yaksha and Abha Bhatnagar Roy as his wife beautifully depict both the depth of the young lovers' emotions in their joyful dance when they are together, as well as their deep sorrow when they are apart. The stately presence of king Kubera, the quiet purpose of the cloud dancers, and the beautiful dancing "apsaras", or heavenly dancers, all serve to transport the viewer into the story. An explosion of movement and color greet the audience near the end with the entire cast dancing when the lovers are reunited in Yaksha's home city. The inclusion of a brief synopsis of the story in the performance program is helpful, but unnecessary as the story comes clear from the presentation. One can understand the familiar tale even with no understanding of the language.

The author, Carmen Theis, is a well-known Middle Eastern dancer.
