Ashwin Subramanian
Coming from the same family background, Ashwin Subramanian (Shobha’s son) grew up in the US but in an environment immersed in Indian culture. He was initiated into vocal music and Bharatanatyam at a young age and has ably juggled his excellent scholastic achievements with the arts. He received a Merit award from National Foundation for Advancement of the Arts (NFAA) for dance in the year 2002. A recently graduated Computer Engineer from Virginia Tech, Ashwin is an upcoming music composer and has released a CD (in 2007) of his own modern composition melodies – a project that is partially funded by the Prince George’s Arts Council. He is an active performing member of the Jayamangala dance troupe. Along with his mother, Ashwin has been selected to receive the Maryland Traditions Apprenticeship award in FY2008 where Master artist Ms. Subramanian will mentor the apprentice (Ashwin) in the rare skill of Nattuvangam (vocalizing the dance syllables and providing live accompaniment with cymbals).
